“Fair doesn't always mean equal” and “Dealing with worry and anxiety”

Teacher Professional Development (Primary)

Teachers will take on the role of the student in this practical 2 hour workshop to learn skills and strategies that they as teachers can implement in the classroom to support their students social/emotional needs.

“Fair Doesn’t Always Mean Equal”

Teachers and parents often hear the phrase from a child, “It’s not fair!”. In this assembly we explain to the children that fair doesn’t always mean that everyone gets the same thing, fair means that everyone gets what they need. Thechildren are shown through examples that if fair means that we all get exactly the same thing we wouldn’t be helpingpeople because they are not getting what they need to live their life. The children have a lot of fun in this assemblyas they realise why their teachers treat people slightly differently in the classroom and why their parents treat theirsiblings differently too.

“Dealing with Worry and Anxiety”

Worry and anxiety is becoming a real problem amongst children as young as five. In this assembly we explain to the children how sometimes worry can help us to be careful and to think before we act. The children are then shown how they can list all their worries and put them in perspective so that they can carry on with their day to day lives without as much worry. Simple and effective strategies will be taught to the children to calm them down when they are feeling extremely anxious and the children will really enjoy the practical components of this assembly.

Presenter: Mrs Shonel Balsillie
Bachelor of Education (Primary)
Queensland Workshop Facilitator – “The Seedlings Program”
EA NCAS Level 1 Equestrian Coach (General)

Teaching has always been a passion for Shonel. She began teaching children of all ages horse riding and swimming in her teens. She received her Bachelor of Education degree from the Australian Catholic University and has taught from Years 1-7 in both public and private schools over the past ten years.

Shonel has always believed that children who are struggling socially and emotionally cannot reach their full academic potential without first addressing these concerns. She is thrilled to be able to share the Seedlings assemblies and workshops with children, parents and teachers in her home state of Queensland in an effort to help as many children to become resilient, confident and compassionate people in our ever-changing world.
