Experts in the field of positive psychology argue that emotional intelligence may be as important or even more important than cognitive intelligence for success in school, career, and life. There are multiple positive characteristics will be covered in this seminar that fall under the broad domains of positive character and emotional intelligence. While social emotional learning is a valuable pursuit in its own right, there is a vast body of research connecting social emotional abilities with academic achievement and other positive educational outcomes. It is therefore vital that all parents and teachers foster home and classroom cultures that consider and promote social emotional learning. This seminar will provide practical strategies that teachers and parents may use to support the positive development of these important social emotional abilities such as:

  • Impulse control: the ability to stop and think to make an informed choice instead of being controlled by every urge or feeling.
  • Growth mindset: the belief in the capacity for continual human growth and the associated ability to think strategically in order to identify ways to learn from one’s experiences.
  • Resilience: the ability to bounce back in response to adversity.
  • Theory of mind: the ability to infer the thoughts, emotions, desires, and beliefs of others to predict and understand human behaviour.
  • Compassion: the ability to feel sympathy and concern for the sufferings or misfortunes of all other people regardless of impeding factors.
  • Empathy: the ability to combine theory of mind and compassion to understand and share the feelings of another.
