About the Learnersaurus program
Learnersaurus is a literacy program with an alternative approach for students who are struggling to acquire basic reading, writing and spelling skills. This program is targeted at students who have not responded to classroom teaching, other targeted interventions and students with Dyslexia. Based on research and principles derived from the Orton and Gillingham approach and Dyslexia Action UK the program incorporates explicit teaching, multi-sensory practice and learning through discovery.
Key areas of focus during the Learnersaurus program are:
- Alphabet knowledge and sequencing
- Developing automaticity in letter/sound recognition
- Letter formation/writing (capital letters and linked-in lowercase handwriting)
Learnersaurus is a flexible 40 week program. If a student is progressing more quickly than expected the program may be accelerated and take less than 40 weeks. If a student is struggling with any concepts or work the program may be slowed down and take more than 40 weeks. It is a time intensive program because regular repetition of concepts is integral to success for students. Students will attend one 50-60 minute session with their coach per week as well as completing 3-4 (3 minimum, 4 ideally) reinforcement sessions (20-30 minutes per session) per week with a parent at home. One parent must attend the session with their child and coach each week in order to learn the routine they will be implementing at home. Students receive their Learnersaurus Literacy Pack during the first session.
About the 26 Letters Program
Through the initial assessment process it may be determined that a student does not have the necessary alphabet knowledge and sequencing skills to effectively begin working with the Learnersaurus program. In this instance the student will be started on the 26 Letters program.
Key areas of focus during the 26 Letters program:
- Clear and automatic letter writing
- Alphabet sequencing (correct alphabet order)
- Alphabet knowledge (vowels, consonants, capital/lowercase letters)
This is the initial step learners must take in order to successfully begin learning how to read, write and spell. 26 Letters is preparation for learning literacy. The program usually takes 10 – 20 weeks (but may vary according to individual progress) depending on the outcome of the assessment and rate of progress during the program. Students will attend one 30 minute session with their coach per week as well as completing 3-4 (3 minimum, 4 ideally) reinforcement sessions (15-20 minutes per session) per week with a parent at home. Students receive their 26 Letters Literacy Pack during the first session. This pack contains all of the books and resources that will be needed for the duration of the program.
