Collaborating with parents of students with specific learning disorder

Parent and school engagement?does?not occur in isolation. It is driven by the developmental needs of the student and is shaped by the policy and rhetoric of governments.?The day to day experiences of educators and parents are influenced by?these macro,?meso?and microsystems. Understanding these external influences on parent engagement can help to guide our everyday practice, as students with dyslexia need stronger collaborative efforts between schools and families to help them achieve academically and improve mental health outcomes.

Reflection on the parental experience gives insight into how teacher, parent and student well-being can be improved by focusing on the relationship between schools and parents and implementing best practice for students with dyslexia.?This presentation will provide school leaders and teachers with insight into the experiences of parents of children with dyslexia. From this, targeted actions for enhancing parent-school collaboration will be identified. With a few simple strategies a school can improve parent engagement, academic outcomes and family well-being.

School leaders and educators will leave with:

  • knowledge of ‘what is dyslexia?’ and the external forces that influence the school experience
  • insight into the experiences of parents of children with dyslexia
  • an understanding of collaborative practices
  • strategies for working collaboratively in a school/parent partnership
