Etymology: Word Origins

One of the main reasons for why there is a mismatch between the spelling of a word and how it is pronounced is because spoken language is continually changing and these changes are not usually reflected in corresponding changes to spelling. In addition, English has arisen from the intermingling of many other languages. Therefore, to truly understand the English language code, you also need an understanding of the origins of words and the interrelationships of words which share a common history – this is etymology. In this workshop, Lillian will discuss the etymology of some words and share how this knowledge can be used to assist students with improving their reading and spelling.

Dr Lillian Fawcett is a specialist literacy teacher with over 25 years of experience and university qualifications in education and psychology. She has developed a range of spelling and reading programs based on well-research literacy acquisition and memory retention principles which has enabled her to successfully help hundreds of students improve their literacy skills. Numerous teachers and schools throughout Australia are currently using Lillian’s evidence-based Cracking the ABC Code programs.
