Explicit Teaching – What is it and why is it effective?

The research shows that the most effective and efficient type of instruction for beginning learners is explicit instruction. This workshop will cover:

  • The research comparing explicit versus discovery type learning.
  • The key components of explicit instruction with examples from teaching literacy.
  • Analysis of a lesson to determine which teacher behaviours are good/not so good examples of explicit instruction.
  • The point at which the focus should move from explicit to implicit instruction.

Dr Lillian Fawcett is a specialist literacy teacher with over 25 years of experience and university qualifications in education and psychology. She has developed a range of spelling and reading programs based on well-research literacy acquisition and memory retention principles which has enabled her to successfully help hundreds of students improve their literacy skills. Numerous teachers and schools throughout Australia are currently using Lillian’s evidence-based Cracking the ABC Code programs.
