The Power of Orthography

Why does ‘egg’ have a double consonant on the end and why do we spell ‘my’, ‘pie’ and ‘dye’ differently? What are the morphemes contained in the word eluded and what does each morpheme mean? Due to the complexity of English, competency in written English requires an understanding not only of the sound-symbol correlation used in the encoding and decoding process but also an understanding of orthography. This is particularly true for those older children who are still struggling with reading and spelling. This workshop provides some insight into orthography and some strategies for developing students’ knowledge in this area.

Dr Lillian Fawcett is a specialist literacy teacher with over 25 years of experience and university qualifications in education and psychology. She has developed a range of spelling and reading programs based on well-research literacy acquisition and memory retention principles which has enabled her to successfully help hundreds of students improve their literacy skills. Numerous teachers and schools throughout Australia are currently using Lillian’s evidence-based Cracking the ABC Code programs.
